Dr. Jill Waibel is a board certified medical practitioner specializing in dermatology. Her office is based in Miami, Florida. Specifically, Dr. Waibel specializes in general dermatology, but possesses a deep knowledge and experience with several other forms of dermatological conditions as well as cosmetic procedures. Above all, she takes a special interest in scar and burn laser treatments and her success in these areas is proven through her years of delivering satisfactory results to her clients.

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself and your achievements?

Dr. Waibel: I am a board certified dermatologist, having received my certification from the American Board of Dermatology, with more than fifteen years of experience in this profession.

Additionally, I am the founder and director of Miami Dermatology and Laser Institute (MDLI) which is based in Miami, Florida. I work alongside a team of skilled physicians at our state-of-the-art dermatology center in order to provide our patients with the absolute best and most professionally-skilled care available.

I also conduct clinical trials and perform continuous research in stem cell and laser procedures and techniques. As a result, I have received numerous awards over the years such as the “Cutting Research Award” from the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery.

Q: Can you tell us about a few of the services you offer at your institute?

Dr. Waibel: Certainly. At out institute, we have over thirty-five innovative devices through which we treat a wide array of skin diseases and scars among various other conditions. We perform scar therapy, burn therapy, laser resurfacing, fat reduction for body contouring, wrinkle removal procedures, and even tattoo removal.

Q: Are there different treatments offered for scars? If so, how do they work?

Dr. Waibel: Scar treatment is a very vast topic because there are so many different types of scars and each of them requires specific consideration when it comes to treating them.

For example, there are:

  • Raised and depressed acne scars
  • Burn scars
  • Hypertrophic scars
  • Keloid scars
  • Surgical and cosmetic surgery scars
  • Traumatic scars

As you can imagine, something that may work well for a certain type of scar won’t work for other types. Moreover, depending on the particular kind of scar, you can also find that there is more than one type of treatment that is available.

If we were to just use raised acne scar as an example, then we have four possible treatments available for it, namely:

  • Cryosurgery
  • Intralesional injections
  • Laser therapy
  • Scar surgery

I hope that gives you a brief idea of how many variations of scars and treatments there are. Of course, it is best to always consult with your doctor first to determine which procedure will be ideal for your individual situation.

Q: You mentioned laser therapies earlier, can you explain a bit about the treatments you do by laser?

Dr. Waibel: Laser therapy is the treatment of the future. So many treatments which were once thought to be impossible or which required extensive recovery time and/or caused a lot of pain are now possible. This is all thanks to the advancements which are brought about by laser and light therapies.

To give you an idea of the vast array of treatments possible with lasers, let me list just a few:

  • Removing wrinkles
  • Tattoo removal
  • Hair removal
  • Brown spots, freckles, and sunspots removal
  • Birthmark removal
  • Treating skin cancer
  • Removing acne scars
  • Removing surgical scars
  • Treating rosacea

From these, let’s take tattoos for example. Tattoos are quite common now and people tend to have certain tattoos inked in haste, so later on down the line, they either want to alter them or have them completely removed. Fortunately, both of these are now possible via the means of laser therapy.

Q: That’s very interesting. Do you perform cosmetic-related treatments, as well?

Dr. Waibel: Definitely. Cosmetic procedures are very popular nowadays and my institute offers a wide range of cosmetic procedures for those who are interested.

We have, for example, the cosmetic procedure known as CoolSculpting. This is a body contouring option where layers of excess fat are frozen through cryolipolysis which is basically a process of destroying fat cells by reducing the temperature. It is usually painless, both during the procedure as well as afterwards, and there is no significant recovery time required because it is a non-invasive procedure.

Apart from that, if you are looking to “turn back time” and restore your youthfulness, we also perform various anti-wrinkle treatments through the use of dermal injections and fillers. So, as you can see, we are a lot more than just a scar treatment clinic.
